The Plot
The film begins with a young Raja Ravi Varma looking for an inspiration for a painting. He meets Sugandha, a beautiful woman who works as a maid in a palace. He asks her to pose for him and starts painting her. His first two paintings of Lakshmi and Saraswati are praised by the king and the public, but Sugandha falls in love with him and seduces him. He then starts a relationship with her, which affects his marriage and his inspiration. He starts painting erotic images of Sugandha, which are considered as obscene and blasphemous by some orthodox sections of the society.
He faces legal charges for hurting the religious sentiments of the people and is brought to court. He defends his paintings as expressions of art and devotion, and argues that beauty is the manifestation of God. He also challenges the monopoly of the priests over the access to the divine images. He wins the case, but loses Sugandha, who commits suicide after being humiliated by the public. He then decides to print his paintings and distribute them to the masses, making them accessible to everyone. He becomes famous and wealthy, but also lonely and depressed. He dies in 1906, leaving behind a legacy of art and controversy.
